Dear Governor Crist,
First of all, thank you for your service to our state.
Please veto Bill 6. The reason for my view is this: if the large government would step back and allow the districts to make more decisions, numerous improvements could be made that are simply impractical on this large scale. The state government cannot and should not dictate each move of the people. (As is evidenced with the current tax system disaster [i.e. it is virtually impossible to follow all of the rules without breaking another one], the more involved the "big guys" of government are in making decisions, the more disastrous and impractical it becomes. If districts were permitted to make more decisions on their own, then there would be a sense of pride and naturally most people would want to do their best. In addition to this, a student's test scores do not accurately measure a teacher's effectiveness. Some people take tests well, whether their teacher is great or terrible. Some people are simply not good test-takers, but are very intelligent. A student can be greatly influenced (positively or negatively) no matter what his or her FCAT scores read. I believe that too much stress is already put on students to score well on a test, and this would only add to that. This also puts added stress on teachers and administrators, encouraging them to find ways to cheat the system and/or on the tests.
Thank you so much for your consideration in this important matter, Governor Crist.
Sincerely,
Barbara
